The San Dieguito Heritage Ranch is proud to present the exhibit Bumann Ranch; a Homestead Heritage in its Main Street Building. Travel back in time over one hundred years to explore the fascinating story of the Bumann family and the homestead they called home.
The Bumann Ranch in Encinitas, established in 1886, is one of the last remaining homestead ranches in San Diego County. The Bumann family has owned the ranch for three generations and Richard and Twink Bumann still live there on 10 of the original 160 acres. The remarkable degree of preservation of the original homestead buildings, machinery and household furnishings is a testament to the dedication of Richard and Twink Bumann to the preservation of this unique historical resource. The Bumann Ranch is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The exhibit details the hard work and resourcefulness of Hermann F. Bumann and his wife Emma Marie as they turn their 160 acres of unimproved homestead land into a successful working ranch. It also explores the adventures and occasional mis-adventures of the twelve Bumann children growing up on this rural corner of Olivenhain.
The text and photographs used in this exhibit were provided by Richard Bumann. The exhibit was curated by Sinéad Ní Ghabhláin and Linda McArdle.
